Apolemichthys trimaculatus
| Identification | Brilliant yellow body with a vivid black spot on the forehead, a black spot at the base of each pectoral fin, and a white rear body and tail. Blue lips add a quirky accent. |
| Maximum Length | Up to 10 inches (25 cm) |
| Origin | Indo-Pacific — East Africa to Samoa |
| Minimum Tank Size | 100 gallons |
| Reef Compatible | With caution — known to nip at corals and clams |
Behavior
Also called the Three Spot Angel for the three distinctive black markings. A personable and attractive midsize angelfish. Moderately bold once established. Best kept singly unless in a very large system. Not the hardiest of angels initially but settles in well once eating.
Diet & Feeding
Sponge-heavy omnivore. Must have sponge-based angel preparations in the diet for long-term health. Supplement with frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and algae.
Cautions
Needs sponge in diet or it will decline. Not reef safe with corals. Acclimation can be slow — offer live foods to trigger eating.
