In nature, Bettas generally inhabit shallow bodies of water with

In these warm, shallow habitats, oxygen levels are frequently low, which
has likely led to the evolution of the lung-like labyrinth organ that
allows Bettas (and other Anabantoids) to breathe air at the surface of
the water.
