
Overview
“CO2 scrubbing” means removing carbon dioxide from the air that feeds your protein skimmer, so that excess CO2 does not dissolve into the tank and drag your pH down. In homes with high indoor CO2 — which is most of them — a simple CO2 scrubber can raise and stabilize reef pH with no dosing or automation.
Why Reef pH Drops
Modern homes are sealed tight, and indoor CO2 climbs high, especially in winter and in occupied rooms. Your skimmer pulls in that CO2-rich air and drives it through the water, where it forms carbonic acid and pushes pH down — often into the low 7.8s or below. Chronically low pH slows coral calcification and growth even when your alkalinity is fine.
How a CO2 Scrubber Works
A CO2 scrubber is a small canister of CO2-absorbing media (soda lime) plumbed onto the skimmer’s air intake. The skimmer then draws air that has had its CO2 stripped out, so instead of adding acid to the tank it actually helps off-gas CO2 and lift pH. Most media is color-indicating, changing shade as it is used up.
The Benefits
Removing that CO2 typically raises pH by a couple of tenths and, more importantly, keeps it stable day and night. Higher, steadier pH improves calcification and coral growth, and it is a cheaper, simpler fix than a controller-driven CO2 or kalkwasser setup. Many reefers see noticeably better SPS color and growth after adding one.
When You Need One (and When You Don’t)
Consider a scrubber if your pH runs low (consistently below about 7.9–8.0) once you have confirmed your alkalinity is in range. It is most valuable in tightly-sealed or CO2-heavy homes. You may not need one if your pH already sits around 8.0–8.3 and is stable, or if you can run a fresh-air intake line to the skimmer, run a refugium on a reverse-light cycle, or dose kalkwasser.
Media & Maintenance
Soda lime is the standard media; the color-change indicator tells you when it is exhausted and needs replacing. Keep the media dry, size the canister to your skimmer’s air draw, and check it periodically — a spent scrubber simply stops helping, so stay ahead of the color change.
