Behavior
The Yasha Goby (also called the White Ray Shrimp Goby) forms one of the most fascinating symbiotic partnerships in the reef hobby. It pairs naturally with the Randall’s Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus randalli) — the nearly blind shrimp excavates and maintains a burrow in the sand while the sharp-eyed goby stands guard at the entrance, signaling danger with a flick of its tail. When threatened both retreat instantly into the burrow. In captivity this partnership can be observed daily and is a highlight of any reef tank. The goby is shy but becomes bolder once the pair establishes their burrow.
Diet & Feeding
Carnivore. Feeds on zooplankton and tiny invertebrates near the burrow entrance. In captivity accepts frozen mysis shrimp, copepods, and small meaty foods. Feed small amounts twice daily.
Cautions
Very small and shy — may be outcompeted for food by boisterous tank mates. Best kept with other peaceful, small fish. Needs a sand bed of at least 3 inches for the pistol shrimp to burrow. Purchase with a Randall’s Pistol Shrimp for the best results. May jump — lid recommended.
