Centropyge tibicen
| Identification | Dark, nearly black body with a large white oval or keyhole-shaped patch on the side — the feature that gives this fish its common name. Bright orange eye ring adds vivid color contrast. |
| Maximum Length | Up to 7 inches (19 cm) |
| Origin | Indo-Pacific — East Africa to Micronesia and Samoa |
| Minimum Tank Size | 70 gallons |
| Reef Compatible | With caution — one of the more aggressive Centropyge with corals |
Behavior
Also called the Melas Angelfish. A hardy, bold pygmy angel that is easy to feed and adapts readily to captive conditions. More likely to nip at corals and clams than many of its relatives, making it better suited to FOWLR setups. Can be feisty toward other dwarf angels.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivore. Grazes heavily on algae and detritus. Supplement with spirulina, nori, frozen mysis, and sponge-based preparations. A well-varied diet keeps it healthy and reduces coral nipping.
Cautions
Not generally reef safe — known coral nipper. Best in FOWLR. Aggressive toward conspecifics and other Centropyge.
