Blue Spiny Lobster

Panulirus versicolor

Identification Electric blue body with striking white and black markings on its legs. No claws — uses spiny antennae for defense.
Maximum Length 16 inches
Origin Indo-Pacific
Minimum Tank Size 100 gallons
Reef Compatibility Not reef safe

Behavior

Nocturnal and territorial. Hides in caves and rock crevices during the day and ventures out at night. Juveniles are more easily kept than adults. Grows very large and will become increasingly aggressive.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivore. Feeds on mollusks, crustaceans, and meaty marine foods such as shrimp, fish, and clams.

Cautions

Not suitable for reef tanks — will consume ornamental shrimp, snails, and small fish. Requires a very large tank long-term. Handle carefully; the spiny antennae can lacerate skin.
