Blue Leg Hermit

Cilibanarius tricolor

Identification Bright blue legs with red and orange banding. Small body housed in a snail shell. One of the most popular and affordable clean-up crew members.
Maximum Length 0.75 inches
Origin Caribbean
Minimum Tank Size 10 gallons
Reef Compatibility Excellent

Behavior

Highly active scavenger and algae grazer. Hardy and extremely easy to keep. Constant motion across the substrate and rockwork makes it an effective clean-up crew member. Will fight over or kill snails to steal their shells.

Diet & Feeding

Herbivore. Grazes on filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, and detritus. One of the best natural controls for hair algae in reef tanks.

Cautions

Will kill snails for their shells — provide several extra empty snail shells in the tank. May be eaten by larger predatory fish, puffers, or triggers.
