| Identification | Distinctive dark chocolate-brown body covered in a fine white reticulated scale pattern. Vivid red-orange tail. A white bar sits just behind a black eye mask. Also sold as the Collare Butterfly or Red-tailed Butterflyfish. One of the hardier butterflyfish for the home aquarium. |
| Maximum Length | 7 inches (18 cm) |
| Origin | Indian Ocean — Red Sea and Persian Gulf east through India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia |
| Minimum Tank Size | 100 gallons |
| Reef Compatibility | No — corallivore; will eat Acropora, LPS, and other coral polyps |
Behavior
An active, curious swimmer that explores all levels of the aquarium. Can be shy when first introduced; provide ample live rock and open swimming space. Settles well once acclimated and is among the more robust and disease-resistant butterflyfish. Often does better in pairs, though two males may spar in smaller tanks. Keep with peaceful, similarly sized fish.
Diet & Feeding
Corallivore in the wild. In captivity, begin with live or frozen mysis shrimp, frozen enriched brine shrimp, and finely chopped meaty seafood. Many specimens will accept pellets and algae-based foods over time. Target-feed with tongs until the fish is eating confidently. Do not house with corals or ornamental anemones.
Cautions
Not reef safe. Will consume SPS and LPS coral polyps, anemones, and tube worms.
