Behavior
The Melanurus Wrasse (also called Tailspot Wrasse) is one of the most popular and useful wrasses in the reef hobby. It is an active, personable fish that spends its day swimming through the rockwork in search of food. It is particularly valued for its natural pest-control behavior — it actively hunts and consumes fireworms, pyramidellid snails, flatworms, small mantis shrimp, and other unwanted hitchhikers. It buries itself in the sand at night and when startled.
Diet & Feeding
Carnivore. In the wild eats small crustaceans, worms, snails, and zooplankton. In captivity readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and quality carnivore pellets. Feed 2-3 times daily.
Cautions
Will eat small ornamental shrimp (sexy shrimp, small cleaner shrimp) and tiny snails — choose tank mates accordingly. An excellent jumper; a tight-fitting lid is essential. Needs a sand bed of at least 2 inches to sleep in.
