Behavior
The Longspine Squirrelfish is one of the largest and hardiest squirrelfish in the trade. Nocturnal by nature, it hides in caves and crevices during the day and emerges at night to hunt small crustaceans and worms. It produces audible grunting clicks to communicate. Its bold reddish-orange color and large eyes make it a handsome centerpiece for big FOWLR systems. Provide dim lighting and plenty of caves and overhangs so it feels secure.
Diet & Feeding
Carnivore. Hunts crustaceans and small fish at night. In captivity readily takes meaty foods — mysis, chopped silversides, krill, squid, and marine pellets. Feed in the evening.
Cautions
Grows large with a hearty appetite; needs a spacious tank (100+ gallons) with strong filtration. Will eat small fish and ornamental shrimp. Sharp fin and gill spines — handle carefully. Nocturnal; provide caves and dim light. Best in a large-fish community.
