Hippocampus erectus
| Identification | A robust Atlantic seahorse, variable in color from tan and orange to near-black, often with fine pale lines along the neck and body. One of the most commonly captive-bred seahorses. |
|---|---|
| Maximum Length | 7″ |
| Origin | Western Atlantic |
| Minimum Tank Size | 30 Gallon (tall) |
| Reef Compatibility | Reef safe with soft corals; keep with peaceful tankmates only. Avoid stinging anemones and aggressive corals. |
Behavior
Slow, deliberate and peaceful. Needs a calm, low-flow species tank with hitching posts (macroalgae, gorgonians or artificial holdfasts). Captive-bred specimens are far hardier than wild ones and readily eat frozen food. Do not house with fast, competitive feeders.
Diet & Feeding
Frozen mysis is the staple, fed 2–3 times daily; enrich for best health. Captive-bred animals are already weaned onto frozen food.
Cautions
Susceptible to bacterial infections in poor water; requires pristine parameters. Only combine with slow, gentle tankmates.
