Macolor Snapper

Macolor Snapper

Macolor niger

Identification Juveniles are boldly patterned in black and white with long trailing fins, mimicking other species; adults turn dark grey-black. Also called the Black-and-white or Black Snapper.
Maximum Length 29″
Origin Indo-Pacific
Minimum Tank Size 300 Gallon
Reef Compatibility Not reef safe. A large predator that eats fish and crustaceans.

Behavior

A hardy, fast-growing schooling snapper. The striking black-and-white juvenile is what draws hobbyists, but it grows quickly into a large, plain adult that needs a very big tank with open swimming room. Peaceful toward fish too large to eat.

Diet & Feeding

Meaty foods — silversides, shrimp, squid, krill and chunks of marine fish; feed heavily while growing.

Cautions

Grows very large and loses its juvenile pattern. Plan for adult size and provide a huge tank.
