Behavior

Soapfish get their name from the soapy, toxic mucus they secrete when stressed — this can kill other fish in a closed system if the fish is severely stressed or dies. An ambush predator that lurks among rocks. Fascinating but requires careful handling and tank mates.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivore. Feeds on smaller fish and crustaceans in the wild. Offer frozen silversides, large mysis, and meaty carnivore foods. Can be trained away from live food with patience.

Cautions

Toxic skin mucus can be lethal to tank mates if fish is severely stressed or dies. Do not keep in a fully enclosed system with sensitive fish without monitoring. Handle with extreme care.
