Zebrasoma gemmatum
| Identification | Stunning jet-black body covered in bright white spots across the entire body and fins, with a vivid yellow tail fin. Considered one of the most beautiful tangs in the hobby. |
| Maximum Length | Up to 9 inches (22 cm) |
| Origin | Indian Ocean — Madagascar, Mozambique, Reunion Island; rare in trade |
| Minimum Tank Size | 100 gallons |
| Reef Compatible | Yes |
Behavior
Shares the Zebrasoma body shape — deep and disc-like — with the Yellow Tang and Sailfin Tang. Moderately aggressive toward other tangs, but generally manageable. Rarely seen in the hobby due to its restricted wild range and limited collection.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivore. Offer dried seaweed daily, spirulina-based foods, and quality herbivore pellets. Provide plenty of live rock for natural grazing.
Cautions
Commands a premium price due to rarity. Moderately aggressive toward other Zebrasoma species. Acclimate carefully; wild-caught specimens can be finicky at first.
